Indie Developer WayForward has a new game coming out, according to a recent listing on the Australian Classification Board.

The game, titled River City Girls, is apparently a multiplatform release that will contain "Mild themes, violence and coarse language." The classification was made on April 11th.

WayForward, best known for the Shantae Series of games, has made no official announcement for any River City Girls title.

We do know that the River City name may be a reference to the series of the same name, which goes all the way back to the Nintendo Entertainment System. Known as Kunio-kun in Japan, the series, currently owned by Arc System Works', has been licensed for independent use for years.

The last game announced in the Kunio-kun series was a PC, Switch and PS4 title, Downtown Rantou Koushinkyoku Mach!!, or River City Melee: Battle Royal Special, which was developed and produced by Arc System Works. Since they were not listed with WayForward in the Australian classification, it is likely that Arc System Works licensed the title out.

No other information has been given at this time, though the name alone implies the River City beat-em-up style of gameplay mixed in with female characters. This wouldn't be the first time that WayForward dealt in this style of game, they previously made Double Dragon Neon which was a successor to the beat-em-up series from the same developer.

Quick Take

If the game is related to the River City series, that's all good considering the high quality products WayForward put out. Titles like Shante, The Mummy Demastered and Ducktales Remastered show off their skills as retro-styled developers, why not give us a take on River City Ransom?

Of course, there is a possibility that the game is something else entirely. In truth, we have no way of knowing what River City Girls actually is. For now, though, we just need to wait for more information from WayForward.
