Ubisoft Announces Movie Adaptation of The Division

Rumors of a film based on Ubisoft's relatively new IP The Division have been floating around for some time now, and today, Ubisoft revealed that they've all been true. In a recent blog post published by Ubisoft, it was announced that Ubisoft Motion Pictures is currently working to bring the polarizing MMOFPS to the big screen.

While bringing The Division to the big screen may seem like a no-brainer, Ubisoft still needed to find talent that would entice a larger audience to go see the movie, and so they brought in actors Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Southpaw) and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty) to star in the movie. Ubisoft also revealed that both Gyllenhaal and Chastain will actively take part in the development process of the movie through their production companies.

Little else is actually known about the movie other than that it is in fact happening. The game's setting is that of a post-epidemic New York City in which Division agents have been called on to rid the city of various threats and restore order. I think it's safe to assume that Gyllenhaal and Chastain will be playing the roles of these Division agents, but this is just speculation.

The Division isn't the only Ubisoft franchise being taken to the silver screen. The biggest movie project that the publisher has in the works at the moment is the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie set to release on December 21st starring Michael Fassbender (X-men, Prometheus). Ubisoft also has movies based on the franchises Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, and Rabbids currently in the works.

Quick Take

Turning The Division into a movie seems like a slam dunk for Ubisoft to me. The thing that I enjoyed most about the game was its setting and premise, and that can translate beautifully to the big screen. If I am Legend is any indication, people like movies set in post-epidemic New York City, and just like I am LegendThe Division film has the big name actors to attract a larger audience. This is a video game movie that I can get behind, at least for now.
