An epic clash with a monster in Total War: Warhammer III

Total War: Warhammer update 2.4 has arrived, and it's making a pretty momentous change. The Immortal Empires mode is out of beta and is now available to all players, regardless of which other games in the series you own, so now's the perfect time to head back into the grand strategy game and give it another try.

Since the beta launch of Immortal Empires way back in August 2022, Creative Assembly says it's worked hard to "create the largest and most definitive Total War experience ever". As of today, according to the studio, the mode is officially out of beta, and although there are plenty of bug fixes and improvements to make, Immortal Empires is now ready to be unleashed on the world in full.

Prior to this latest update, you needed to own Total War: Warhammer and Total War: Warhammer II if you wanted to take on Immortal Empires (which it's fair to say most fans did). Now, however, you can play it whether you own those games or not. DLC is available to buy separately if you want to try out extra factions beyond Total War: Warhammer III's base options. You can check out a quick rundown of the changes in update 2.4 right here.

Here are the eight factions you can play as if you own Total War: Warhammer III but don't own either of the previous games.

  • Daemons of Chaos
  • Grand Cathay
  • Khorne
  • Kislev
  • Nurgle
  • Slaanesh
  • Tzeentch
  • Warriors of Chaos

If you want to play as the base factions from Total War: Warhammer or its sequel, you'll need to buy the base games, but you can buy DLC from those games and use it in Total War: Warhammer III's Immortal Empires mode regardless of ownership of the first two games. If it's all getting a little confusing, you can check out the new Immortal Empires FAQ, which should make these changes a little easier to understand.

Of course, there are plenty of other changes coming to Total War: Warhammer III as a result of this update. Gameplay changes include tweaks to the Beastmen, Dark Elves, and Dwarfs, as well as a range of changes and improvements for other factions. Make sure to take a look at the full patch notes for the game if you're planning on waging war anytime soon.

Total War: Warhammer III is available to buy right now on PC via Steam. It's also available as part of a PC Game Pass subscription.
