The Total War Three Kingdoms mod tools have been released. These new software tools will make it easier than ever for talented modders to put custom content into the game, although Creative Assembly has come out and stated that they're going to be keeping a close eye on what pops up on the Steam Workshop.

A blog post on the official Total War website highlights the announcement of the Total War Three Kingdoms mod tools. The blog post notes that the tools will be largely the same as those released for previous games, although they also note that there are some issues with the first public release of the tools. One such issue is that games may lock up if maps are downloaded through multiplayer lobbies; the blog post notes that players should download custom maps through the Steam Workshop for now to play it safe while they work on a fix.

One particularly interesting highlight in this announcement is the statement that they will be curating the Steam Workshop:

WORKSHOP CURATION

At this point we’d like to remind mod authors that we will be curating the workshop and remove any mods that breach the modding terms found in the game’s EULA. Please refrain from creating mods that are designed to provoke, intimidate, or antagonise other groups, reference other IP, or create content of a sexual nature. You can read the EULA in full here.

"Mods that directly take artwork, sounds, models etc from the properties of other companies (say Koei's Dynasty warriors) will need to be moderated," read a comment from Creative Assembly developer /u/OtherTom_CA on the /r/totalwar subreddit. "For characters within those IP's that have a distinct likeness - if fan made content is close enough to that likeness - we may have to moderate them too."

Several other users in the same thread were quick to point out that mods which violated this policy would nonetheless be available at sources outside of the Steam Workshop like Nexus Mods and other similar websites.

You can find mods for this game on the Steam Workshop and on Nexus Mods. If you don't yet already own this game, you can get it on Steam at a price of $53.99 or your regional equivalent, a 10% discount as part of the Steam Summer Sale 2019.
