If you've been wondering what the Tiny Tina's Wonderlands crossplay situation is, then wonder no more. Developer Gearbox has confirmed the game will feature full crossplay across all platforms, including PlayStation consoles.
How will Tiny Tina's Wonderlands crossplay work?
Unlike Borderlands 3, which famously didn't support crossplay on PlayStation, it looks like Gearbox has managed to secure Sony's cooperation for Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Gearbox head Randy Pitchford announced via Twitter that the game, which launches on March 25th, will feature crossplay for all platforms, "including PlayStation". Pitchford thanks Gearbox's engineers, as well as publisher 2K Games and "first parties, including Sony", for making Tiny Tina's Wonderlands crossplay possible. Needless to say, this means you'll be able to enjoy the game alongside your friends, no matter which platform you're playing on.
This was far from a foregone conclusion. Back in May last year, it emerged that Sony may have been charging developers and publishers for implementing crossplay between PlayStation consoles and other platforms. Supposedly, Sony stipulates that if a game's player base is mostly on PlayStation but its revenue is mostly earned from other platforms, then the developer of that game must pay a fee. If a game's player base and revenue are mostly down to PlayStation consoles, then developers don't have to pay anything.
It's not clear whether Pitchford and Gearbox managed to secure some kind of discount or waived fee or if the studio simply paid what Sony was asking. Interestingly, though, in a followup tweet, Pitchford said he considers PlayStation crossplay for Borderlands 3 "inevitable". Pitchford says there will be more information about this as soon as the studio has it, so we'll have to wait and see whether this comes to be. In any case, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands crossplay has been confirmed, so if you've got some Xbox or PlayStation buddies looking forward to playing the game, you can rest easy.
What is Tiny Tina's Wonderlands?
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a followup to Borderlands 2 DLC pack Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep (which has also spawned its very own tabletop RPG). Like its predecessor, it's a spinoff to the Borderlands series in which players will play as participants in an RPG run by the titular Tiny Tina. Unlike previous titles in the series, you'll be able to create your own characters, but Wonderlands will feature the same looter-shooter gameplay you've come to know and love from Borderlands.
You'll be able to check out Tiny Tina's Wonderlands when it launches for PC, PlayStation consoles, and Xbox platforms on March 25th. In the meantime, if it's been a hot minute since you revisited Borderlands 3, make sure to check out the Director's Cut update, which adds a new boss and some extra loot. Between Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, and Destiny 2's new Witch Queen expansion, there's plenty to love right now if you're a fan of looter shooter games.
