Uprising Studios and publisher THQ Nordic have announced Scarf, a cute 3D platformer with echoes of Journey, Rime, and Team Ico games.
Scarf casts players in the role of Hyke, whose polymorphic scarf allows him to explore his environment in a number of ways. You can check out the game's announcement trailer here:
The trailer shows off some of the game's aesthetics and gameplay, as well as its serene soundtrack. Scarf takes place across a number of diverse environments, including grassy plateaus, deserts, and snowy mountain landscapes. The trailer shows Scarf's protagonist, Hyke, navigating his environment and using the scarf to facilitate exploration. Hyke's scarf can be used to float, glide across platforms and interact with the landscape; at one point, Hyke creates platforms to traverse a gap using his scarf.
Narrative-wise, we don't know too much about Uprising and THQ's game at this point. Uprising and THQ Nordic describe Hyke's goal as "meld[ing] with [the world] and becoming part of nature", promising a story which resonates with all audiences and can be understood on multiple layers. The story won't contain any text; all the game's dialogue is wordless, it seems. There's a chance Uprising and THQ Nordic will reveal more about their game's story in the coming months, but this kind of game thrives on ambiguity, so perhaps not.
If all of this sounds like your bag, then you can pick up Scarf for PC when it launches this winter. We don't have a concrete release date yet, nor do we know whether the game will launch this year or next. Expect more details as Uprising and THQ reveal them. For now, you can learn more about the game over at the official Uprising Studios website.
