A Tetris Movie is in Development?

Ah, Tetris - what platform have you not been available on? Even the Virtual Boy has an exclusive version of you! It seems much like Doom, every platform imaginable simply MUST have a port of you... and it seems, also like Doom, you're planning to debut on the big screen!

The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy column reports; Threshold Entertainment - the same company that managed the two live-action Mortal Kombat films! - is now in production for a live-action movie based off of the Tetris franchise. So far the project is described as a "very big sci-fi project" that "isn't a bunch of lines running around the page". Apparently the actual game is only "the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalatic significance" in regards to the movie.

So... a little worrying. But hey; it's not the first time that a videogame movie was so drastically different from its subject matter! Besides Threshold's CEO discussing the importance of brands in Hollywood, and his claims that the studio has a much more imaginative story for the film, another line seems to stand out - notably, if the film does well then they have plans to expand the Tetris Universe beyond the game. Whether that means Tetris block plushies, a TV show, or even a version of Tetris based off the movie; no one knows.

Needless to say; it's easy to make a lot of assumptions about this news before we've actually had a chance to see exactly what this movie is. For all we know, they could be pulling it off as deadpan as Hasbro's Battleship! Personally, I'm hoping it ends up just as campy as it sounds.

Regardless, we'll be lining up any news regarding this film as it falls into view.

Credit is given to The Wall Street Journal for the initial announcement regarding the film.
