Any self-respecting fan of the XCOM Long War mods wouldn't want to see upcoming strategy sim Terra Invicta delayed, but that's unfortunately what's happened. Creator Pavonis Interactive says the delay will help the team balance and polish the game.

Terra Invicta delayed? But why?

According to Pavonis, Terra Invicta is "feature complete", but it needs a little extra time to cook. The delay will allow the team time to polish and balance the "huge number of mechanics" Terra Invicta will offer. It's likely Terra Invicta would incur a lot of players' ire if the game launched in an obviously unbalanced state, so this delay makes sense, although it'll be a little disappointing to you if you were looking forward to playing it this year. However, the devs did release a new Terra Invicta trailer to tide you over until the game launches. It shows off some of the new additions to the game, including giant alien megafauna, new ship designs, and more. Check it out below.

While Pavonis doesn't specifically mention the pandemic as a reason for Terra Invicta's delay, it's been a trying year or two for developers. Terra Invicta was Kickstarted at the end of 2020, and although it was likely in some form of development prior to its campaign, the pandemic has almost certainly affected its development cycle in some way. It could be a similar situation to other Kickstarter projects like Suikoden spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle, which was delayed earlier this year to "reach greater ambitions". Here's hoping both it and Terra Invicta can fulfil their potential.

When is the new Terra Invicta release date?

Unfortunately, you may have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on this one. The new Terra Invicta release date hasn't been announced yet, but Pavonis has set a tentative release window of Q2 2022. That means we can likely expect the game sometime next spring, or perhaps summer at the latest. It's a while to wait, but Pavonis and publisher Hooded Horse are confident this delay will help them polish up the game. Since Terra Invicta is feature complete, let's hope no further lengthy delays are announced.

When it does launch, Terra Invicta will task you with colonizing space as one of seven different factions.

Terra Invicta is a grand strategy title from the creators of the XCOM and XCOM 2 Long War mods. It's a space sim that will allow you to colonize the solar system as one of seven disparate factions, each of which has its own motivations. If you're a fan of the astropolitical maneuvering of Stellaris, you should like this one too. Long War is often cited as one of the best XCOM mods, so here's hoping Pavonis can bring its expertise to bear on Terra Invicta. We'll bring you more on this as we get it.
