Square Enix released a teaser trailer for Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth earlier today, suggesting a new project is forthcoming for the Valkyrie Profile series. The trailer, which features Lenneth talking directly to the audience, does not have any gameplay. Instead, it features music from original composer Motoi Sakuraba, and Lenneth musing on her role as the chooser of Einherjar. A Twitter feed also popped up, saying that it will post information in the future. With Square Enix promising more information in the future, we'll have to wait and see if this is a true remake of the 1999 original, or a remaster of the 2006 version.

As a curious aside, today (March 2nd) marks exactly 12 years since Lenneth was released on the PSP in Japan. With the prequel mobile game Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin racking up over two million downloads, and the recent releases of Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, Square Enix is clearly taking a look at their catalog. Despite the mixed reception of Secret of Mana, and supremely negative reception of Chrono Trigger, should Square Enix opt to actually port Lenneth, it would be long overdue.

Valkyrie Profile as a series is known for emotional storytelling, punishing difficulty, and convoluted mechanics. Discounting the mobile game, only three games have been released by developer Tri-Ace since 1999: the original, released for the PSP in 2006; Silmeria, released for the PS2 also in 2006; and Covenant of the Plumereleased for the DS in 2009. All three games have seen moderate success, with the original Valkyrie Profile seen as one of the best games of all time. With copies of the original running nearly $90 just for the disc, a modern remaster/release would do well to bring Valkyrie Profile to a modern generation of consoles and gamers.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth features the titular Lenneth as she attempts to gather souls for Valhalla. Featuring a mix of platforming, random encounters, and narrative gravitas, Valkyrie Profile was praised for offering a mature storyline and incredible music. Valkyrie Profile inarguably put Tri-Ace on the map, which led to more Star Ocean games, among other things. Even though this teaser trailer did not offer any information about platforms or indeed, a date when we can expect more info, there's a lot to look forward to in the future.
