Upcoming kart racer Team Sonic Racing has been delayed until May 2019.

The news came via a tweet posted on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account. The tweet cites a need to make Team Sonic Racing "the best game it can be" as the principal reason for the delay, and names the new release date as May 21st, 2019. The game was originally slated to be released this winter.

In addition to the delayed Western release date, the Japanese version of the game is now simply slated for a 2019 release, with no specific month or even time period given. Sega is apparently working on getting a specific release date to fans as soon as possible, but for now, the game's Japanese release is somewhat shrouded in mystery.

This news comes after rumors suggested that Team Sonic Racing was to be delayed. Nintendo Life posted an image of the game's Russian box art, which showed an updated release window of 2019, and speculated that the game's poor performance might be responsible. The @sonic_hedgehog tweet seems to confirm this to some degree, commiserating with fans that "delays are no fun" but that "quality matters most". Developer Sumo Digital retweeted the original tweet, but said nothing further on the matter.

Team Sonic Racing is a spinoff of the main Sonic the Hedgehog series and a follow-up of sorts to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and its sequel Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, also developed by Sumo Digital. It was originally announced ahead of E3 back in May this year. Unlike its two predecessors, which incorporated characters from Sega's history alongside Sonic and his friends, Team Sonic Racing will only feature characters from the Sonic series. The game features team-based gameplay, which differentiates it from the two prior games in the series, both of which saw single drivers in karts (if the Bonanza Bros don't count). It'll be released for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 21st, 2019, barring any future delays.

Dark Souls changed my life, and I'm here to spread the good news. I like pretty much all sorts of games, but I judge everything by its proximity to our Lord and saviour, Dark Souls.
