The new Mystery Deathmatch game mode is now live in Overwatch according to a submission on the game's subreddit.
Mystery Deathmatch combines FFA (Free For All) Deathmatch and Mystery Heroes into one package. You'll randomly spawn as one of the game's cast of characters and change characters again once you die. The first player to make their way to 20 Final Blows wins the game. The top four out of eight players get a point towards their weekly Arcade boxes. As with most new game modes introduced to the Arcade, you can also get a one-time bonus loot box for placing in the top four.
The game mode was first introduced with a PTR patch that deployed alongside D.Va's Animated Short. The patch also included the brand-new Control Map Busan. The PTR concluded and Busan went live in the game last week with its own dedicated Arcade card, but Mystery Deathmatch had not yet been made available. Now that the Arcade bonus loot box timer has reset and the modes have switched out; Mystery DM has taken over the prime spot in the Overwatch Arcade.
Mystery Deathmatch features the full DM map rotation alongside the newly-introduced Blizzard World variant for the game mode; Blizzard World largely centers on Point B from the full Hybrid map version. You can play Mystery DM in Overwatch right now by going to the Arcade in-game. If you don't yet own this fantastic shooter from Blizzard Entertainment, you can pick it up for its lowest-ever price of $12 by subscribing to Humble Monthly for a limited time.
Quick Take
I absolutely adore FFA Deathmatch, but Blizzard had seen fit to replace the full map rotation with Petra and Château Guillard only for a week apiece. Now they've done the same silly thing again with Mystery Deathmatch, and I fear that the number of weeks we'll get the full map rotation with normal FFA DM rules has just been reduced by one. I really wish they would add a few more Arcade cards and make FFA DM with the full map rotation a permanent fixture. It's perfect for learning new heroes or just playing for fun without messing up anyone else's experience. What do you think of Mystery Deathmatch in Overwatch?
