The next game from Project Highrise developer Somasim has been officially announced: the mafia management sim City of Gangsters will be arriving on PC sometime in 2021.
In City of Gangsters, players will be plopped down in a city in 1920 — right at the start of Prohibition and the precursor to one of the most turbulent times for organized crime in the United States. You'll start out by making your own homemade booze and eventually command a citywide empire dealing in all sorts of illegal activities.
If you'd like to get a feel for the game, you can check out the latest devlog discussing resources and weapons:
What is City of Gangsters?
City of Gangsters is a mafia management sim — simply put, you will be at the helm of a brand-new organized crime family. Unlike many titles in the mafia genre, it looks like you will truly be starting your organization from the ground up rather than starting as a part of an existing organization.
At the beginning, players will simply be selling some homemade booze. You'll soon move on to supplying whole neighborhoods and opening speakeasies, but you'll also have to deal with the local police, federal agents, and competition from rival organizations. There's a lot of money on the line, and things are sure to get bloody.
There's still a lot we don't know about the game, mind — aside from today's announcement, the developer has been quietly releasing devlogs discussing various gameplay elements on this playlist in its YouTube channel. We're sure to find out more in the next few months.
When is the City of Gangsters Release Date?
The City of Gangsters release date will be sometime in 2021; unfortunately, SomaSim has declined to provide a specific date just yet. We don't know the price yet, either, but it looks like this new game will start off by launching on PCs.
In the meantime, you can catch a developer AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit's /r/Steam community on December 12, 2020, starting at 7:00 AM Eastern and lasting for approximately an hour. You can also add City of Gangsters to your wishlist on Steam and follow its brand-new Twitter account. If you're looking for something to play right now, you can also play Project Highrise for free on Steam for this weekend only and buy the game at a fantastic 70% discount.
