It would appear that a sequel to one of the most influential first-person shooters, System Shock 2, is being made. A company called OtherSide Entertainment has launched a teaser site for a new game. A member on the RPG Codex Forum dug around in the source code and discovered the site to be for System Shock 3. The countdown was scheduled for 5 days but another page, that has since been removed, also went live that confirmed the game to be System Shock 3.
The company behind this, OtherSide Entertainment on their website say, "We’re a brand new game studio focused on rebooting classic game franchises." OtherSide Entertainment includes multiple members of the old Looking Glass Studios, the studio behind Thief and System Shock, and was in fact founded by Paul Neurath the founder of Looking Glass studios.
Nothing more than the teaser site is known about the game. The only thing to go on is the quotes that appear on the site. Things like, "I am flawless, perpetual... absolute." and "Pathetic creature of meat and bone... You think you can hack me?" Both very reminiscent of SHODAN in System Shock.
The first System Shock was released in 1994 with its sequel System Shock 2 coming out 5 years later in 1999. The series has been very influential with Ken Levine who worked on System Shock 2 going on to make it's spiritual successor, a little game called BioShock. Other members of that team went on to create the Dues Ex franchise.
It was last month on November 12th that Night Dive Studios, the team responsible for the Enhanced Edition re-release of System Shock, announced it had acquired rights to the System Shock franchise and is currently in the process of making a full remake of the first game. They also had mentioned a new entry in the series and may partner with a studio for it. It has not been confirmed that the project OtherSide Entertainment have teased has anything to do with Night Dive Studios although it would be safe to assume that they are working together.
Currently OtherSide Entertainment are working on a Kickstarted project, a reboot to the Ultima Underworld franchise they are calling Underworld Ascendant. Describing the game as "a modern update of the classic Ultima Underworld series" It is possible they could also launch a Kickstarter for System Shock 3.
How do you feel about another System Shock game? Does the fact that some of the original team is involved in the project make you excited to see the results?
