A fearsome-looking dragon in the new Swords of Legends free-to-play 2.0 update

Publisher Gameforge has decided to make Swords of Legends Online free-to-play. The MMO will drop its asking price next month. That's also when the new 2.0 update lands, bringing with it new classes, new story chapters, and an increased level cap, among other things.

What will the Swords of Legends Online free-to-play model look like?

Swords of Legends Online has only been on release since July last year, but it's already going free-to-play. In a press release, Swords of Legends Online publisher Gameforge details how the game's new free-to-play model will operate. According to Gameforge, in-game purchases and battle passes will remain cosmetic, and there will "not be any pay-to-win elements". The transition is happening in late February, although we don't have an exact date for it yet.

Swords of Legends Online goes free-to-play in February, alongside the new 2.0 update.

According to Gameforge, "player population growth" was the reason behind transitioning Swords of Legends Online to a free-to-play model. Although initial sales were fairly strong, the game's community has been dwindling since its release in July last year, so Gameforge is likely hoping that a free-to-play model will boost its player numbers. It worked for PUBG: Battlegrounds, after all, a game which was also in a somewhat steady decline in terms of player numbers.

What's coming in the new Swords of Legends Online 2.0 update?

As well as the free-to-play transition, we're also getting a brand new Swords of Legends Online update next month. It's bringing two new story chapters, as well as five new zones to explore ranging from a snowy blossom-strewn landscape to a vertiginous mountain. You're also getting two new classes: the Fox Mage and the Warrior. The Fox Mage is a hybrid damage and healing class, while the Warrior sub-class can contribute either to a tank or DPS build. You'll also get new character slots to make alts and try out all the new features.

The new Warrior and Fox Mage classes should add some diversity to your Swords of Legends Online build.

In addition to the aforementioned new features, the level cap is also being increased beyond level 37, allowing you to carry on strengthening your character. New PvE dungeons and raids are on the way, as well as new 3v3 and 10v10 PvP maps. Between this and the upcoming Amazon Studios MMO Lost Ark, it looks like you'll soon have plenty of choice when it comes to free-to-play online experiences. It's well worth heading over to the official Gameforge website if you want to see everything that's being added in the Swords of Legends Online 2.0 update. Stay tuned for more info on this one.
