Smoke and Sacrifice, a hand-drawn survival RPG from developer Solar Sail Games, will launch for PC and Nintendo Switch on May 31st.

News of the game's release date for these platforms came via a press release, given by Solar Sail Games and publisher Curve Digital. Accompanying the press release was a new trailer, which depicts some of the game's aesthetics, its narrative direction, and its gameplay. Check out the trailer here:

Smoke and Sacrifice sees players take the role of Sachi, a mother on a quest to determine the fate of her child. Sachi's village thrives amidst an icy wasteland, thanks to the "Sun Tree", to which Sachi's firstborn child has been sacrificed. Soon, however, Sachi discovers all is not what it seems, and so sets out to discover the truth of the world she lives in, as well as whether her child can be retrieved. Solar Sail describes the story as a "brutal story of motherhood and survival", with gameplay mechanics which complement the brutality of the world.

Gameplay-wise, Smoke and Sacrifice "[takes] cues from modern survival classics". Players will "craft, fight, survive and explore the huge open world", navigating a complex ecosystem which sees creatures foraging, breeding and preying on one another. The actions players take can "alter the behavior of plant and animal life", which will have an effect on the kind of materials Sachi can forage and the items she can craft. In addition, the world will feature "deadly smoke" which will change how both enemies and players behave.

I've never been a survival buff, but this one sounds pretty special, so I'll be checking it out. Smoke and Sacrifice launches May 31st on PC via Steam, and on Nintendo Switch via the eShop. The game will cost $24.99, with a 20% discount for the first 2 weeks from launch. PS4 and Xbox One versions will follow sometime in 2018.
