Days Gone has its first piece of free DLC. The game's Survival Mode is now available, with more DLC coming later this month.

Survival Mode is a new difficulty setting that builds on the existing Days Gone Hard Mode. The new mode introduces a number of tuning and balance changes that will make surviving in Oregon more challenging for players. Enemies are now much harder and players can't simply bypass them with Fast Travel. There's no heads-up display in Survival Mode, but you can temporarily activate it with Survival Vision. The mode also removes enemy awareness indicators and outlines, so you won't always know where enemies are or if they've spotted you. Playing and beating Survival Mode in Days Gone will net you some exclusive new bike skins and trophies, so get hunting.

If you're a fan of Days Gone, there's plenty to get excited about in June. Later this month, Bend Studio and Sony will begin releasing Challenges for the game. Challenges consist of Bike, Combat, and Horde variations. Each one will have unique rules and scoring modifiers. If you do well, you'll receive patches which will bestow small stat boosts. These boosts can be more health, faster stamina recharge, or decreased focus cost, among others. Challenges also award rank and credits, which players can use to buy new skins as well as stat-boosting rings. The rings will have more of an effect than patches, but you can only equip two at a time, introducing a new strategic element to the game. Challenges will give players the ability to play as multiple characters as well as introducing new skins for Deacon.

The first Challenge for Days Gone is called Surrounded, and it'll land in late June. You'll have to survive an infinite onslaught of Freakers in Sherman's Camp. The longer you survive, the more points you'll score. Killing Freakers will extend your timer, while sub-challenges like headshots and environmental kills will grant score multipliers. Bend is planning twelve challenges over twelve weeks in all.

We don't know when Surrounded will land, so we'll let you know when we do. While you wait, check out TechRaptor's review of Days Gone.
