Developer Deck13 and publisher Focus Home Interactive have announced they are working on a sequel to their hit 2017 Soulslike sci-fi RPG The Surge which will be aptly titled The Surge 2.
The announcement was made over on The Surge’s Steam community page, and within the announcement, Deck13 confirmed that, much like its predecessor, The Surge 2 will be coming to both PC and consoles. The sequel doesn’t yet have a specific release date but the announcement post also confirmed that Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive are currently planning to release it sometime in 2019.
As for specific details about The Surge 2, Deck13 is naturally keeping most of them close to the vest for now, but the above announcement post does confirm that the sequel will be set within a massive ruined city and will thus feature larger, more expansive levels. The unique limb-targeting combat system which helped The Surge stand out from other Soulslike games will also be returning, and the announcement post even says the system will be expanded, though exactly how remains a mystery for the time being. Naturally, The Surge 2 will also include other expected enhancements like new weapons, abilities, drones, and implants, everything a player will need to take down the sequel’s new enemy types and boss encounters.
Fans who want to know more about The Surge 2 won’t have to wait long as Deck13 plans to talk more about the upcoming sequel during the annual Le What’s Next de Focus, a yearly press event hosted by Focus Home Interactive in Paris, France which is actually set to begin later today, February 7, and will continue on into tomorrow, February 8.
Editor in Chief Andrew Otton reviewed the first game in the series, giving it an 8.5 and concluding, "The Surge has great gameplay and wonderful levels to get lost in as you run around throwing limbs about and destroying robots."
