"Project M" is the codename for a new project from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds -- and it's expected to arrive in Early Access sometime this year.
Subnautica is a survival crafting game that manages to stand out from the crowd in two ways: you spend the vast majority of your time underwater and the game's epic story actually has an ending. Six months after it left Early Access, Unknown Worlds revealed an expandalone called Subnautica: Below Zero.
Subnautica: Below Zero left Steam Early Access in mid-May 2021 and we haven't had much in the way of updates to the game since then. Now, we might know one of the reasons why: Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds is working on a new game.
What We Know About 'Project M,' the New Game from Subnautica Developer Unknown Worlds
As Eurogamer reports (via Reddit), the new game from Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds is currently code-named "Project M." The news arrives as part of a recent press release from Krafton, a company that recently purchased Unknown Worlds as one of its many recent acquisitions.
Aside from the codename, this new game is going to be a "turn-based strategy game." It's unclear if this will be set in the Subnautica universe, a new IP, or something else entirely. We do know, however, that it will be coming to Early Access when it launches, just like the last two games from the company.
I also have to take a moment to mention the name -- the name "Project M" is better known as a mod for Super Smash Bros. Melee geared towards the competitive community. Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds' new project has no relation to that. Fortunately, the "Project M" moniker is also just a codename for now; hopefully, there won't be any potential for confusion once the game's actual name is revealed.
When is the Project M Release Date?
The Project M release date will be sometime in 2022. We don't yet know the official name for this new project from Unknown Worlds, but it's expected to arrive in Early Access.
For now, there's plenty to explore in the fantastic games that have already been created by Unknown Worlds. You can buy Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero for PC and consoles for $29.99 apiece via their respective websites.
