Void Bastards is a vibrant and stylish strategy shooter from Blue Manchu, a development studio led by Irrational Games co-founder Jonathan Chey announced at Microsoft's XO18 event today. The shooter is said to be inspired by Bioshock and System Shock 2 and will launch in early 2019 on Xbox One and PC.

The game will have you leading a band of misfit prisoners of the Void Ark through the derelict spaceships and other dangers of the Sargasso Nebula. You'll have to choose where to go, what to do, and when you want to fight.

Board derelict spaceships and plan your mission, taking note of the ship layout, what hazards and enemies you might encounter and what terminals and other ship systems you can use to your advantage. Success will require you to master combat, manage ship controls, scavenge supplies, craft improvised tools, and more.

The strategic layer sounds similar to FTL: Faster Than Light, where you'll be targetting certain systems of a ship to your advantage. You could detour to the generator to bring the power back online or fight your way into the security module to disable the ship’s defenses. It sounds like you'll have some options at your disposal, and how you approach each adventure may determine its success.

Void Bastards will feature a "12-15 hour campaign that you can complete with an endless supply of prisoners, each with their own unique traits." When one prisoner dies, another steps forward to carry on the fight. In roguelite fashion, some of your progress will be carried over between prisoners, namely your crafting progress.

Quick Take

I love the look of the game. It's got a really distinct and sharp look. The trailer looks pretty wild and it certainly seems like Blue Manchu may have something pretty cool here. I look forward to checking out next year.
