Set in the 1920's, in Stygian: Rise of the Old Ones the player must create their own character from eight different archetypes, ranging from the academic to the occultist. Each class has unique Attributes, along with Skills and Belief Systems. Choosing a belief system is important, as it will determine how each character perceives and copes with the world around them.

During the open-world campaign, the player will try to discover what has happened the town of Arkham, a story which will unfold in a Lovecraftian-like fashion. Throughout the game, players will encounter 2D turn-based, strategic combat as they face fanatic cultists and monstrosities that will work against the character's own Sanity. Combat in Stygian: Rise of the Old Ones will difficult, as each ability and move could have dire consequences for the player.

For instance, each character's Sanity and overall mental state will influence their dialogue options, which will both be a benefit and a detriment for the player. The Belief System will determine how the characters cope within the new reality of Arkham, and how quickly they regenerate their lost Sanity. Each Belief System will also offer different dialogue options, so players will be able to explore the storyline in different ways each playthrough.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones will be released on Steam on September 26 for $24.99. There's also a playable demo on the Steam page, so check that out if you're interested.

Quick Take:

I really like how this looks. Mixing the creeping dread and overall horror of Lovecraft with an in-depth CRPG is a great idea, and I'm very interested to see how it turns out. From the trailer, it looks solid, so hopefully, this new title will turn out to be a good choice for Lovecraft fans.
