F. Gary Gray has been announced in a Deadline exclusive as the upcoming director for the Saints Row film. He'll be tasked with bringing the Third Street Saints in their full glory to the silver screen, hopefully with all the madness and bravado that Mortal Kombat reboot writer Greg Russo can pack into the script. Having clearly already mastered rap (Straight Outta Compton), racing (The Fate of the Furious) and soon alien movies (MIB: International), the duo will be tasked with bringing the often hilarious (sometimes unintentional) exploits of everyone’s favorite urban street gang (and spoiler: Presidency!) to life.

Deep Silver Volition’s hit saga follows the rise of the street gang from their humble beginning to the halls of power. The game’s meteoric power scaling and nonstop over-the-top action sequences give the film slam-dunk status for a summer blockbuster if the pair can pull it off.

The Saints never hold back, though. Many of the games toy with the far end of the M rating, practically since the beginning. Who knows where in the timeline these Silver Screen Saints might start their tale? It’s been over 10 years since Saints Row 2 and five since the last major installment. And there’s always Gat Out of Hell.

What we do know is that it’s likely the producers of the film will have direct access to the Saints Row development crew and their records. Deep Silver Volition’s parent company also owns one of the film companies (Koch Media) behind the production. They could pick up any of the stories and members of the crew and run with them. They may use existing characters and plotlines or pick and choose from any part of the Third Street Saints’ ascension.

We’ll have to wait for more details before we know for sure what the Saints Row film will entail. Viewers unfamiliar with the video game series are still likely in for a wild ride through some of the saltiest streets alive.

Hail to the Chief, Baby!
