A Steam blog post went live today, detailing a comprehensive look at 2018 and the year’s best selling games on

Categories include titles achieving a specific goal such as:

  • Top Sellers
  • Best New Releases
  • Top Selling VR Titles
  • Top Early Access Grads
  • Most Played Games
Valve doesn’t release the exact revenue for each title, but it places games in tiers based on their performance:
  • Platinum: 1st - 12th Top Seller
  • Gold: 13th - 24th Top Seller
  • Silver: 25th - 40th Top Seller
  • Bronze: 41st - 100th Top Seller
Interestingly, the number one game on the Top Sellers list is Warframe, a free-to-play game, with Dota 2 coming in second. According to the post, the list is of games that “earned the most revenue in 2018, which includes all different kinds of Steam revenue; game sales, in-game transactions, and DLC. The resulting list includes a mix of free-to-play and premium games”. This is great news for Digital Extremes, who have been working on Warframe since 2013. Other list highlights include Rocket League, Rainbow Six: Siege, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

The Top New Releases list breaks titles into their month of release and factors in both first-week revenue and overall profits from the entire year. There is a ton of variation here, with April only having five titles while February has twenty-two. The whole list is made up of 150 games.

The Top Selling VR Titles are to be expected, with games like SUPERHOT VR, Fallout 4 VR, Skyrim VR, and Beat Saber making up the top list. Some titles, such as RAW DATA and Arizona Sunshine, have been at the top tier for three years now.

Early Access Grads consists of uber-popular games like Dead Cells, Conan Exiles, Subnautica, and Rust. The category was for titles that have been in early access for any period but went into their full versions this year.

Finally, we have the Most Played list. These titles have had a minimum of over 15,000 simultaneous players at one time this year, but makes sure to exclude games that only had spikes of engagement due to giveaways or events. Games reaching over 100,000 players at once include Monster Hunter: World, Dota 2, Rainbow Six: Siege, Team Fortress 2, PUBG, and Grand Theft Auto V. What’s especially interesting is seeing primarily single-player games in the over 50,000 tier. Titles such as Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and FarCry 5 hit it big here.
