Are you tired of the end-goal of every major relationship involving getting married and having children? A new mod for the farming sim Stardew Valley allows players to engage in platonic (non-romantic non-dating) with all twelve of the game's bachelors and bachelorettes.
Released today on Nexus Mods, this mod (which coincides with Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week) allows players to designate a list of datable NPCs that the player instead wants to have a platonic relationship with. Affected NPCs will have "best friend" relationships instead of dating and a platonic partnership instead of marriage. This also affects texts and events to coincide more with the fact that you're in a platonic relationship instead of a romantic one. Also, the event that chews you out for having multiple 10-heart relationships in the vanilla game is disabled, because there's no shame in having multiple best friends.
Amaranthacyan, the mod's creator, says that there's still a good bit of work left to be done on the mod. One example they list is when you kiss your partner by right-clicking on them, resulting in a speech bubble with a heart along with a "dwop" sound effect. Amaranthacyan is hoping to work that out so players will have the option to change the heart to a smiley face with no noise, similar to when players "kiss" Krobus, a shadow monster that can become the player's roommate. Some other planned updates for the mod include an asexuality version which removes "suggestive" lines (although that may be another mod, according to the author,) and compatibility with the Multiple Spouses mod to allow for multiple romantic and platonic relationships.
The Stardew Valley Platonic Partners and Relationships mod can be downloaded here on Nexus Mods. The mod requires the content patcher as well as the Custom Fixed Dialogue mod by aedenthorn, which is used to customize many of the NPCs' lines about dating and marriage.
