After being announced in March of this year, StarCraft Remastered's release date has been announced in an intense trailer on the official StarCraft YouTube channel. Fervent StarCraft'ers can expect Blizzard's legendary RTS to grace their Blizzard Launchers on August 14th. Enthusiasts who pre-order StarCraft: Remastered will also receive a cosmetic upgrade for each of the game's primary race's bases in addition to some StarCraft 2 digital rewards of a portrait pack and access to co-op commander Alexei Stukov.

The video shows a contemporary human world coming across signs of an invasion from the three StarCraft races; Zerg eggs on a beach, Terran ships buried beneath desert sand-dunes, and the appearance of Protoss portals. The video ends with the message "the world may never be the same again", and while it's hard to imagine that this release will shake the world's core, it's certainly going to make a huge impact on the StarCraft community.

StarCraft Remastered will cost $14.99/£12.99 from the Blizzard Store, and requires access to the StarCraft Anthology, which is currently available for free on the Blizzard Store. According to the press release, the remaster aims to bring the game to the modern day by adding 4k graphics, improved audio, matchmaking, community leaderboards, and player profiles with individual stats. Equally legendary expansion Brood War will also be included in the purchase, and will also benefit from the improvements being made to the main game. Also confirmed by the press release is the long-suspected compatibility between versions. Players of the original StarCraft games will be able to play against players on StarCraft Remastered, and vice versa. Players will also be able to swap between the remastered graphics and the originals, at the touch of a button - presumably in a similar style to The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition.

StarCraft is back, and it's better than ever. Despite constant and consistent updates for StarCraft II, the community has clearly had a hankering for the original StarCraft for some time - and Blizzard is clearly hoping that this remaster will spur some more StarCraft esports success. Nostalgia is a powerful thing - but will it be powerful enough to establish StarCraft Remastered as an esports brand?

Are you pre-ordering StarCraft Remastered - or does having the option to play with the older (free) version stop you from paying for the upgraded sights and sounds of the remaster? Let us know down below!
