The free companion app to the upcoming EA game Star Wars: Battlefront is available for download now. The app allows you to track your in-game stats and customize your character on the go. You can also view all your unlocked weapons and cards, in-game currency and blasters and customize your loadout. If you link your Microsoft, Playstation Network or Origin account, you can get notified when your friends come online and check out the leaderboards. The app also gives you the latest news for the game.

In addition to this the app gives you access to the mobile strategic card game Base Command. This turn-based tactics game has you fight off waves of Imperial forces to protect your base.

The game is freely available to anyone who wants to sneak a peek. Players who have purchased Star Wars: Battlefront, however, will be able to earn credits you can spend in the Battlefront game by playing Base Command. There are no microtransactions in Base Command. Credits are a currency earned in-game by playing the game, and are not purchasable with real money. How many credits you can earn for use in the main game depends on your performance in Base Command. The more stars you get after a siege influences how many credits you get. You will start out with a default deck, but you will be able to use earned cards from the main game in the Base Command game.

The app is available for Android and iOS devices (sorry Windows Phone users. Guess you're out of luck, as always) and via your browser.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be released in just 7 days for North American players, with Europe and Asia also jumping into the fray a few days later. The game recently had an extremely successful beta weekend on all platforms, drawing in more than 9 million players to join the war in a galaxy, far, far way.

The game recently stirred a bit of controversy when EA announced the $50 season pass for the game, a price that is usually a lot lower for other games' season passes.

Quick Take

I like how EA is taking a slightly different take on companion apps than most, offering an actual game to play in addition to tracking stats and the like. I don't know how Base Command plays because I've yet to check it out myself. Don't hesitate to post your experiences with the app in the comments section.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
