Space strategy game Star Control: Origins has received a host of new features in the Fleet Battles Beta update.
Developer Stardock calls the update a major milestone in Star Control: Origins development. The release adds a wealth of new ships, maps, and weapons, as well as gameplay improvements and numerous quality of life updates. The beta is available to players who pre-purchase Star Control: Origins.
Chief among the new features added to Star Control: Origins is the Fleet Battles mode, which allows players to assemble fleets of different ships and battle against other fleets. Players can battle fleets controlled by other players, AI or with friends in local multiplayer. Fleet Battles also offers an integrated ship crafting system, which allows players to create their own vessels and share them via Steam Workshop.
A new gameplay feature has also been added to Star Control: Origins. Scavenging will allow players to collect power-ups from wrecked ships littered around the battlefields of Star Control: Origins, with each power-up color-coded depending on its function. Yellow power-ups give acceleration, green power-ups restore crew health, red power-ups give energy regeneration and blue power-ups add a burst of speed.
As well as these gameplay features, two new ships have also been added to the game. The Kzanti Intimidator is a "nimble ship equipped with deadly proximity mines and a Repulsor", while the Arillou Observer has special cloaking technology. Both ships come with new weapon loadouts. In addition, players of Star Control: Origins will receive 3 new maps, as well as a host of performance improvements including better camera movement, updated UI polish, and improved multiplayer performance.
Finally, alongside the Fleet Battles update, developer Stardock has also released its first collection of alien content packs, which add new lore, music and concept art to the game. Like Fleet Battles, this content is available to players who pre-purchase the game via Steam, Stardock's official store, or GOG(affiliate link).
Star Control: Origins is developed and published by Michigan-based company Stardock Entertainment. Origins is the newest installment in the long-running Star Control series, which began with the original Star Control back in 1990. In order to differentiate it from its predecessors, though, Star Control: Origins will take place in an alternate universe. The game was originally announced back in 2016 and will launch for PC via Steam on September 20th.
