Squad v2.0 Update delay cover

The Squad v2.0 Update has been delayed until early 2021, ultimately forcing fans to wait for the next great iteration of this tactical first-person shooter.

Squad is a military shooter akin to games like Battlefield or Arma with a focus on "combined arms" warfare — that is, players will combat their opponents on foot and in vehicles. Massive 50 vs. 50 battles take place on equally-large maps with an emphasis on tactical combat.

A "v2.0 Update" has been in the works for some time. This update does all of the usual things you'd expect from such a game, carefully tweaking the balance of various weapons, updating flight models, and more. It's been in closed playtesting for some time, but now it appears that fans of this game are going to have to wait to play the new content on live servers.

Why Was the Squad v2.0 Update Delayed?

The delay of the Squad v2.0 Update was largely caused by one reason — the development hardware (and the process used to make updates on it) has been having some troubles for the better part of 2020. These issues were being fixed by updating the server hardware, but the process has not yet been completed.

As a result of these hardware troubles, the developers have been dealing with crashes during the development process, effectively delaying the release of any one particular build. Naturally, this has dragged out the development process even further, ultimately resulting in today's announcement of a delay.

When is the New Squad v2.0 Update Release Date?

If everything goes to play, the Squad v2.0 Update release date should be sometime in January 2021. Thankfully, it seems that players won't have to wait too long for the next batch of content.

There's an upside to this delay, though — Offworld Industries is extending its public playtesting period for the patch for the rest of the year, so you still have a chance to get in on that if you've missed out thus far. In the meantime, you can buy Squad on Steam for $49.99 or your regional equivalent.

What do you think of the Squad v2.0 Update being delayed to early 2021? Are you disappointed that you'll have to wait longer to play on the latest patch? Let us know in the comments below!
