Offworld Industries has launched Squad Update v2.9, debuting some major changes to ammo racks to reduce one-hit kills, a few new map layers, and a boatload of other changes.

Squad is a tactical first-person shooter made by Offworld Industries, a game developer comprised of several people who helped create the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2. Much like Project Reality, the emphasis in Squad is on realism and tactical gameplay rather than running and gunning like an absolute madman. Now, a suite of new changes have arrived today that give players some new content to enjoy while also working to make gameplay a little less confusing.

What's New in Squad Update v2.9?

One of the most interesting changes in Squad Update v2.9 is a rework of how ammo racks work in the game. As the name implies, an "ammo rack" is where ammo is stored for a vehicle. Ammo racks can be destroyed if they're hit directly, but the way this mechanic worked was a little confusing for players.

Going forward, ammo racks will now cook-off once they've fallen to 0 HP. Once that happens, most of the major ammo for the vehicle will be destroyed and the ammo rack will not be able to be repaired. Players will have a random amount of time between 15–30 seconds to clear out before the fireworks begin. This update also removes the "overdamage" from a direct hit that could previously cause an ammo rack to immediately explode if its HP was dropped below zero.

Also arriving in this update is five new map layers for players to enjoy:

  • Mutaha Invasion v2
  • CAF Al Basrah Invasion v3
  • CAF Narva Invasion v1
  • CAF Mutaha Invasion v1
  • CAF Yehorivka RAAS v2

In addition to these new map layers, an issue that was resolved that prevented the Kokan_AAS_v2. Sumari_AAS_v2, and CAF_GooseBay_AAS_v2 map layers from being available to play.

These are the big pieces of new content, but that's far from all the changes in the game; you can read the full Squad Update v2.9 patch notes for all the fine details. You can buy Squad on PC via Steam for just $37.49 right now, a 25% discount as part of the Steam Summer Sale that lasts until July 8, 2021.
