1047 has both good and bad news today. The bad news is that the Splitgate release date has been indefinitely delayed. The good news, however, is that the beta will keep on going until it launches.
Splitgate is a first-person shooter with portals that has become wildly popular. It got so popular, in fact, that the developers had to temporarily shut down the beta for a while because its servers were practically bursting at the seams. It eventually came back up, but lengthy queue times have still proven to be troublesome for some.
Since then, the developers have managed to get queue times down to under 10 minutes in length. Unfortunately, 1047 Games also came to a surprising conclusion: it's holding off on launch and extending its open beta.
Splitgate Open Beta Extended
1047 Games announced that the Splitgate open beta will keep on going for the foreseeable future, effectively delaying the "proper" launch of the game.
In practical terms, not a whole lot is going to change for players. The game will still be available and 1047 Games will continue to work on creating new content and improving the server infrastructure. There is, however, cause for concern when it comes to dealing with such a huge spike in popularity and that's something the game's developer wants to focus on first.
"In looking at the issues facing the scalability of the game’s backend, the process includes far more than simply dealing with server capacity," 1047 Games Co-Founder and CEO Ian Proulx explained in a press release. "We are focused on keeping the game stable for fans, and iterating on the game’s concurrent capacity in order to minimize player wait times. We want to do this the right way, and we want to be prepared for massive scale when we officially launch, all the while continuing to improve the beta with frequent updates, additional features, and improvements to server capacity."
For now, several content updates are planned for the coming months. 1047 Games isn't slacking on the infrastructure side, either; it promises to continue to work on stability and — perhaps more importantly — increasing server capacity (which would further reduce queue times, hopefully).
When is the Splitgate Release Date?
No new Splitgate release date has been announced. For now, the game will effectively remain in beta until 1047 Games feel it's ready to launch.
In the meantime, there's still plenty to look forward to. The devs promise that a "significant announcement" will be dropping at Gamescom 2021 next week. If you haven't yet jumped into this game, you can play the Splitgate open beta on PC and consoles for free right now.
