Xbox, Bugs Bunny, and LeBron James need your help: they're seeking talented fans to make a Space Jam game ahead of the release of the 2021 sequel film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Space Jam is a 1996 film featuring Michael Jordan and the classic cast of Warner Bros. cartoon stars. This movie mixed real-life acting with animation in a style similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, albeit with a somewhat more ridiculous plot: aliens are coming to Earth, and the only way to stop them is by playing basketball.

Aside from having one of the oldest still-running websites on the InternetSpace Jam holds a special place in the hearts of many adults who got to enjoy it in their younger years. Now, a sequel is on the way — and you now have the chance to take a crack at making your very own video game.

How Does the Space Jam Game Contest Work?

Don't worry if you have zero coding skills — the Space Jam game contest won't actually require you to make a game. Instead, you'll be making a game pitch, selecting from one of 16 pre-created images and writing up a short explanation of what you think your game should be.

From there, two winners will be chosen from all of the submissions and will have their ideas made into actual games. These two fan-made creations will be included with the Space Jam: A New Legacy arcade game that will be made available as a Perk for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members next year. The winners will also have their names included in the game credits and receive an exclusive winner's bundle with the following goodies included:

  • Signed and authenticated LeBron James memorabilia
  • Space Jam: A New Legacy merch
  • Nike VIP packs
  • A personalized Xbox Series S console
  • A private friends and family screening of Space Jam: A New Legacy
  • A virtual Microsoft coding workshop for their community

Going along with this theme, Microsoft is hosting free Space Jam-themed coding workshops to help kids get interested in programming. Advanced coders can also take advantage of more complex Microsoft Learn lessons.

If you think you've got what it takes, you can make your pitch for this contest at arcadecontest.xbox.com. The Space Jam game contest is running from now until December 30, 2020, for fans ages 14 and up. You'll be able to watch the next Space Jam movie sometime in 2021.

What kind of game do you think would work well with Space Jam? Do you think Space Jam: A New Legacy will be able to live up to its predecessor? Let us know in the comments below!
