In today's State of Play, Sony opened its livestream with a new trailer for Monster Hunter: World's first major expansion. Titled Iceborne, this DLC takes hunters to more frozen locales. We previously saw a teaser for it in December 2018, which didn't come with a release date. After today, we know the expansion drops on Sept. 9, later this year.
The trailer gives use a good glimpse at a snowy hunting ground called the Hoarfrost Reach as a bundled-up hunter travels through. You'll notice tracks are more visible in the snow as the hunter leaves a trail. While walking through the alpine forest, little critters move their way around the ecosystem.
Then the music kicks in. Two new monsters are introduced, both of which seem to call the frozen area home. The Banbaro uses its massive horns to plow trees and boulders into you, while the Beotodus burrows through the snow, coming up to attack you.
The latter half of the trailer brings us back to a more familiar, less chilling location. However, the tension turns right back up with the reveal of a giant mythical dragon named Velkhana. Right before the title card drops at the end of the trailer, we see this winged creature about to breathe out an icy blast. This creature plays a critical role in Iceborne's story.
Additionally, more monsters will be coming with Iceborne. The fan-favorite creature Nargacuga will make a return, as well as other unnamed beings. Some of the new additions will be a surprise to everyone, while others will return from previous games.
Finally, players will get access to a new device called the Clutch Claw. This item acts like a grappling hook, allowing you to more easily climb onto monsters. Additionally, new combos and upgrades for all weapons will join Monster Hunter: World.
The price for Iceborne remains unknown. We know that it drops on Sept. 9 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while PC players will have to wait for this winter.
