Sony has announced that they will be shutting down servers for a handful of their games spanning from PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Most of these games are older titles for the PS3, however, the not quite year-old game Kill Strain for the PS4 will also see its servers closing, along with a Vita game. Players of these games have until July 1, 2017, to enjoy their online features.

On the Vita Modnation Racers: Road Trip will no longer have online servers. The bulk of online content for the racing game included sharing player made race tracks and GPS features. The game will still be available to play on the Vita and since there wasn’t really any competitive online play, fans of the five-year-old game won’t be vastly affected by the loss of online content.

Sony San Diego Studio game Kill Strain for the PS4 however, is another story. Released in 2016 the free-to-play game will, unfortunately, be closing with the shutdown of its servers. The 3 team PVP game only works with online multiplayer gameplay so the loss of online content will mean the loss of the entire game unless changes are made soon. Although many players seemed willing to pay for skins and other in-game purchases, clearly the game wasn’t doing well enough to keep the servers on. The fact that both Modnation Racers: Road Trip and Kill Strain are Sony San Diego Studio projects may be telling.

The majority of games that will be losing server support are titles for the PS3. The four affected PS3 games are High Velocity Bowling, Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest, Sports Champions and Sports Champions 2. All of these games have been around for five years or more and many utilize PlayStation Move. While these games will still be functional after the servers shut down this summer their online features will not.

A consequence of shutting down these servers will be that trophies for using online features will no longer be attainable. Players will have until July 1st to enjoy the full content of these select games before the servers go down and their online content is no longer accessible. Or the whole game in the case of Kill Strain.
