Following the conclusion of the core Sony E3 2018 show, we got to see one last title in the post-show that was created by FromSoftware: Déraciné.

The presentation for Déraciné opened with imagery that had a storybook theme. A narrator said that you would be born as a fairy. We saw a variety of different scenery in black and white. The camera transitioned to a classroom where color flooded into the picture. A dead white flower on a desk was surrounded by orange particles. It floated in the air slightly and slowly came back to life, and that was the conclusion of the presentation of Déraciné. If you missed it live, here's the announcement trailer so you can see it for yourself:

The video's description has a few more details about the game that weren't necessarily evident in the video. Players will be taking on the role of a spirit in a girls' boarding school. You'll be able to demonstrate your existence to the people there by using your powers, perhaps by doing small things like restoring a dried-up flower as we saw at the end of the trailer. As the game's story progresses, your powers must be turned to grander problems as you try to change the fate of the students at the school by altering the forces of life and time.

The PlayStation Blog post about Déraciné goes into a little more detail. Time will be chaotic, shifting even into the past as you make your way through the game. One of the gameplay mechanics of this adventure will be figuring out events in the game by piecing together fragments of the story. The bond between yourself and the six schoolchildren is emphasized as the most important part of the game. The PlayStation Blog post concludes with a quote from Hidetaka Miyazaki:

“This title got its start when I asked myself whether I could recreate the classic adventure game with its relaxed pace in virtual reality, giving users an entirely unique experience. SIE was interested, and I am very grateful to have them as a partner as we develop this game together.

The result is that the concept behind the title has changed little since those initial thoughts, and Déraciné has a warm, peculiar feel to it that is completely different from anything we have done before. I’d love for as many users as possible to give it a try.”

A VR game with mild hints of Life is Strange from the people who made Bloodborne will certainly make for an interesting title no matter how you cut it. Déraciné will be exclusive to the PlayStation VR and will release sometime in 2018.

What do you think Déraciné will be all about? Does the premise of this latest title by FromSoftware intrigue you? What do you hope to see from this game?
