As the Chinese market continues to grow and consoles being allowed again, more developers are popping up in the area. During the ChinaJoy 2017 convention today Sony announced Monkey King: Hero is Back The Game, their first major effort at developing an AAA Chinese title.

Monkey King: Hero is Back The Game is an adaptation of a 2015 Chinese animated film of the same name that starred Jackie Chan as Sun Wukong. When Monkey King: Hero is Back was released in China it was the highest grossing animated movie of all time, though it has since been surpassed by both Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda 3. Both the movie and the game serve as a retelling of the famous Chinese story Journey to the West.

The trailer opens with a scene of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, facing off against a giant. It then cuts to the movie's director Xiaopeng Tian. He explains that the game is being developed by both Sony Interactive Entertainment and October Media, and will be distributed world wide by Oasis Games. He reveals that you can play the game as either the Monkey King or his friend Jiang Liuer. It then cuts back to the fight, with Sun Wukong able to easily defeat the giant he was fighting.

We then meet Dayong Jin, the executive producer. He revealed that the movie's team is going to be working on the game as well. The game will serve as both a retelling of the movie's story along with new stories and adventures for the game. Concept art showing Sun Wukong and Jiang Liuer fighting various monsters. Jin also said that they were working with Sony to try and squeeze as much power out of the PlayStation as possible and that he wants the game to look better than the movie.

We then cut back to Tian, saying that he wants the game to stand out by having a unique style. He said the game will have a characteristically Chinese look that is expected from their fans. A few more animations are shown off, one of Sun Wukong and a monster punching each other and both recoiling in comedic over exaggerated pain, followed by Sun throwing a chair at a monster, causing it to fumble around so Sun can follow-up with an attack. The trailer then finishes with a quick kung-fu fight between Sun and another monster.
