Sonic Superstars is the next new entry in the Sonic series, and it takes the series back to 2D with a dimension-hopping twist.

Revealed via a trailer shown off through the Summer Game Fest event and livestream, the new Sonic title sees Sonic once again zooming across 2D environments. The levels are reminiscent of older Sonic titles save for the 2.5D aesthetic of the characters and environments, and up to 4 players can join up to take on the levels together as mainstays like Amy, Tails, or Knuckles.

Each Character can likewise access special abilities, transform into different creatures, and much more. A few abilities, in particular, revealed that Sonic and his friends can utilize the 2.5D design of areas to bypass inaccessible areas or traverse water, as well as summon multiple copies of themselves to deal massive damage to intimidating bosses.

As the trailer goes on, however, another twist to the series' usual conventions is revealed. After Sonic stops to rest, a retro 2D style of the same environments and characters is shown to be constantly creeping up behind Sonic. A non-Eggman antagonist is seen at the center of this dimensional disturbance, though it's a little unclear as to who exactly they are.

It's a worthwhile teaser for sure, and well worth a watch from both diehard and casual Sonic fans. The full trailer can be viewed down below.

Sonic Superstars is set to release in Fall 2023 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. For more on the Sonic series, feel free to scroll down and peruse some of our relevant articles.
