Sega surprised everyone this morning by putting up a Steam page for Sonic Lost World, the 2013 Sonic Team developed game that was previously released exclusively on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS as part of Nintendo's three game deal with Sega. The game took inspiration from Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy by featuring more surrealistic level design, as well as integrating old school 2D traversal into the more modern 3D levels. The game also features the Whisp power-up system that was seen in Sonic Colors and later parts of Sonic Generations.

The PC version of the game will run at a full 1080p resolution and 60FPS for the first time, along with your standard Steam integration and support for gamepads and keyboards. It is available for pre-order now for $30, and early customers will also receive a copy of the excellent Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Sega has a storied history of interesting PC versions of their console games, including little known releases of games like Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg and Crazy Taxi 3, and their extensive release of Genesis titles on Steam in 2011. It will be interesting to see how Lost World fares considering that it was originally developed with the two screen approach of Nintendo's platforms in mind. It seems that the game's multiplayer functionality that relied on the tablet is left on the cutting room table, since the Steam release only mentions a single player mode. There is also no word on if the game's DLC levels will be making it over to this new version, although one can assume that the Nintendo focused stages will not make it. Looking at the screenshots, we assume that this version is based on the Wii U release, but we have already contacted Sega with a few questions. We will update when we know more about the specifics of this version of the game.

Quick Take

As someone with a huge Steam library and a love for game preservation, it's always great to see companies port older console titles over to the PC, especially titles that were previously exclusive to one platform. That being said, Sonic Lost World seems like a choice completely out of left field, although perhaps one made out of necessity considering Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice getting pushed back and the lack of other Sonic releases this year outside of mobile. Whatever brought it on, here's hoping it sells well and inspires Sega to put out PC releases of other games. I sure would love to jet pack through Vanquish again.
