Actor and producer Andrew Barth Feldman (“No Hard Feelings,” Dear Evan Hansen, Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical), Tony Winner Alex Boniello (“Disney’s Descendants: The Rise of Red,” Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown), and Matthew Barth Tinkelman have announced today a new murder mystery experience called Foul Play. This series will release weekly for five weeks starting on Friday April 21st at 9pm EST, each VOD will fit a different theme where viewers at home will get to try to solve the murder.

How does Foul Play work?

Those who purchase Foul Play, single episode for $9.99 or the whole series for $39.99, will be able to tune in every week to foulplay.live to watch as a Murder Mystery unfolds. Foul Play will present the viewer with three different room views. In each room you can toggle between different views and enable the audio allowing you to listen to different conversations as the event unfolds. After the murder begins at the beginning of the video the suspects will spread out to different rooms and discuss the events through loose improv with one another. A player won't be able to keep track of absolutely everything so you'll need to be keeping an eye on everything and everyone as the video continues to try to discover who the murderer is.

The list of mysteries and the dates that they release are:

  • The Mansion Case: Murder At Vanguard Mansion on April 21st
  • The Reality TV Case: The True Real Life of Real People on April 28th
  • The Film Noir Case: The Cubic Zirconia Hawk on Mey 5th
  • The Fantasy Case: Dark Curse of Savion Sunguard on May 12th
  • The Children's TV Case: Mr. Robertson's World of Imagination on May 19th

The cast of actors that people can see in these scenarios includes Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things, Sweeny Todd), Michael Urie (“Shrinking,” “Ugly Betty”), Rob McClure (Mrs. Doubtfire, “Julia”), Will Roland (Dear Evan Hansen, Be More Chill, “Billions”), Celia Rose Gooding (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Jagged Little Pill), Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice, School of Rock), as well as many others. Writers involved in the creation of Foul Play include Brennan Lee Mulligan (Dimension 20, Exandria Unlimited: Calamity), B. Dave Walters (Dungeons & Dragons: A Darkened Wish, Shadow of the Red Rage), and Arti Gollapudi (Upright Citizens’ Brigade, The Squirrel).

Hunter Arnold of TBD Theatrics, the company behind the technology that Foul Play runs on, had the following to say in anticipation of Foul Play's release.

We built a unique virtual platform just for this series, through this digital platform, viewers are able to watch and enjoy each case on their terms as it plays out. With the ability to follow the characters and scenarios of their own choosing, they’ll be able to have a different viewing experience every time they watch it.

When each episode premiers viewers can join the official Discord channel to talk with other viewers and work together to solve the mystery. A few of the best guessers will get to chat live with Feldman and Boniello to discuss the case further. If you aren't available for the live event on the release day at 9pm each episode's VOD will be available the following day. You'll miss out on the live conversation aspect but still be able to enjoy the murder mystery.

To get a better understanding of how Foul Play works they've released a YouTube Shorts Trailer as well as an explanation video so that you can get an idea of what to expect when you log on to play.
