It seems like Ubisoft's upcoming open world winter sports game Steep will be getting some competition from free-to-play game Snow, which has a beta coming to Sony's console late this month. A blog post on the official PlayStation Blog tells us a little more of what we can expect from the game, which previously made its debut on PC as an Early Access title.

Just like the aforementioned SteepSnow will take place in a large open world mountain where players are able to go wherever they want using a variety of different vehicles and attributes like snowmobiles, skis and snowboards.

There are more than two dozen drop points on the mountain, each with a distinctive look and gameplay elements that provide countless new challenges. Perhaps the most significant change to Snow is the addition of snowboarding and snowmobiles, which offer new ways for players to ride the mountain and define their own unique style.
The team behind Snow, the small and relatively new games studio Poppermost, has teamed up with a few big brands in the sports industry, allowing players to purchase branded apparel from the in-game store.

This, however, isn't their biggest partnership. In the blog post, Poppermost Productions CEO Alexander Bergendahl announces that they'll be bringing the Winter X Games, one of the biggest events in extreme winter sports, to Snow.

We’ve partnered up with ESPN and have been working closely with their team to recreate the exact course from the 2016 Winter X Games in Aspen. The mountain includes the Slopestyle, Super Pipe, and Big Air courses, all accurately reproduced for your riding pleasure. Players who successfully complete all three X Games events with Gold Medals will unlock the exclusive in-game X Games hoodie.

While the game will be free to download when it officially launches, getting access to the PlayStation 4 beta will initially cost you $19.99. If you decide to buy into the beta you will automatically receive the exclusive PlayStation 4 Founder's Pack, which includes 2 outfits for your character in addition to a gold snowmobile and drone which can't be obtained on the PC or after the game launches.

If you're subscribed to Sony's PlayStation Plus service you will also get some additional cosmetic goodies you can use to deck out your character, assuming the 80s style doesn't offend your eyes too much.

Snow will be the first big winter sports game coming to the PlayStation 4 as a console exclusive and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Quick Take

While it's certainly common to buy into a beta on PC (even for games that will launch as a free-to-play game), it's something you don't really see happen all that often on consoles and some people in the comment section below the blog post are visibly upset by this. It's easy to see why: the PC version of the game is free-to-play even though it's in Early Access, while it costs 20 bucks on the PlayStation 4, at least for now.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
