Grounded is about to get some competition — Smalland will be putting players in a giant forest full of dangers on PC and consoles later in 2021.

Smalland drops players into a forest filled with all sorts of bugs and nasty creatures. This action-adventure game will have you fighting ants, wasps, birds, and more as you try your best to fight for survival while being just a few inches tall

Check out the Smalland Developer Presentation for yourself and see some early bits of this game in action!

While it wasn't shown in today's preview trailer, it looks like there's going to be a building aspect, too — and it seems that your buildings can be destroyed. The game's Steam Store page shows a log cabin getting smashed to bits by the side of a river, so we may have to contend with nature and/or animals wrecking our stuff. We also see some buildings and torches laid out on a tree branch, so there might be some free-form building construction here, too.

It's not all bad, though! Players will be able to align themselves with the creatures of the forest, moving up the food chain and gaining valuable allies to protect them. You'll even be able to mount bugs, mammals, and birds and ride them around the forest!

Smalland Looks Like a Grown-Up Grounded

A game where you're shrunk down to the size of bugs seems awfully familar, probably because Grounded has already launched in Early Access earlier this year (and it's pretty good, too).

Smalland undeniably shares a similar theme, but it doesn't quite have the same aesthetic. It looks a little more grown up and it seems like it might be a more unforgiving game. The world is more expansive, too, with changing seasons and a day/night cycle. If you've found yourself not quite challenged by Grounded, then this upcoming title from Merge Games might be something you should check out.

We're in for a bit of a wait to play this upcoming game, I'm afraid; for now, you can add Smalland to your wishlist on Steam. You can also keep up with the game's development on its official website.
