Popular PlayStation series Sly Cooper is getting made into a CG animated television show as reported by Animation Magazine. Paris’ Technicolor Animation Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment will be producing the series. This news comes after a long disappointing silence concerning plans to make the franchise into a full-length film expected in 2016.

Many speculate that after the less than successful launch of the Ratchet and Clank movie, studios are less willing to translate beloved children’s video game franchises for the big screen and Sly Cooper fans will never see their favorite thieving raccoon grace the silver screen. He may, however, live on in a television series which some argue is a better format to portray the adventures of the charming rogue. Hong Kong based investment group PGS will be handling the global distribution, licensing and merchandising rights for the new series. Yet, Sony isn’t releasing much information about the project as of now.

The first Sly Cooper game was released in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and featured an orphaned raccoon who had turned to a life of thievery, but for good causes. This lovable rogue is joined by dimwitted muscle Murray the hippo and timid but brainy turtle Bentley. Together the team thwarted dastardly villains by stealing important relics and materials before they could get their hands on them and enact their nefarious plans. All the while the crew of stealthy do-gooders were pursued by Inspector Carmelita Fox, the complicated love interest for titular Cooper.

The first three Sly Cooper titles were developed by Sucker Punch Productions with Sanzaru Games developing the fourth title expanding on the world of anthropomorphic animals and introducing interesting new villains and plots. The last of these, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was released in 2013 for the PS3 and PS Vita. The likable characters, amusing stories, and the combination of platforming and stealth gameplay made for a very successful series that just wasn’t able to survive the next generation of gaming. It looks like publisher Sony hasn’t completely forgotten about the well-loved franchise though, as they move forward with plans to turn the IP into a CG television series.
