A new Skyrim co-op mod has managed to rack up more than 75,000 downloads within just a few days of its launch. Skyrim Together Reborn allows groups of between 2 and 8 players to adventure through Skyrim together, and you can download it for free right now.

What's this Skyrim co-op mod all about?

Despite being almost eleven years old (yep), Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still going strong. Not only was Skyrim Anniversary Edition released last year, bundling a bunch of great user-made Skyrim content as well as all of the game's DLC, but there's still a thriving modding scene adding plenty of functionality to the open-world RPG. The latest mod to add a missing feature is Skyrim Together Reborn, a mod created by The Together Team that adds the ability to adventure throughout the land of Skyrim with up to seven of your friends (or complete strangers, if you so prefer). The mod has proven so popular that it's racked up more than 75,000 downloads and over 58,000 unique downloads within its first few days of availability.

Skyrim Together Reborn is a Skyrim co-op mod that lets you explore the world of Skyrim with your friends (or total strangers).

The Together Team's goal was to create a stable Skyrim online multiplayer experience for "about 2-8 players", although the devs have tested the game "with 30+ players". Since modding Skyrim is basically its own game at this point, The Together Team has created a handy Getting Started video to show you exactly how to install and play Skyrim Together Reborn. Over on the devs' channel, you'll also find helpful videos showing you how to sync quest progress with the co-op mod, as well as a rather amusing stress test with over 25 players.

How to install Skyrim Together Reborn

Installing Skyrim Together Reborn is a pretty simple process. You'll need to be running Skyrim Special Edition version 1.6 or higher. If you have Skyrim Anniversary Edition, the devs for Skyrim Together Reborn suggest playing without its enhancements and additions. Unfortunately, if you have Skyrim Legendary Edition, the PC Game Pass version of the game, or the VR version, you won't be able to use the mod. The Together Team has put together a handy guide on its website that you can follow for step-by-step installation instructions, so we'd strongly recommend checking that out. Here's a quick step-by-step guide for installing the Skyrim Together Reborn mod.

  • Update your Skyrim version to 1.6 (whether you're playing Special Edition or Anniversary Edition)
  • (Optional) Download a mod manager like Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 (if you do this, you can simply click "Mod Manager Download" on the Skyrim Together Reborn Nexus Mods page)
  • Download the SKSE mod as well as the All In One version of the Address Library mod
  • Download Skyrim Together Reborn and open the archive (if you haven't used a mod manager), then extract the contents into your Skyrim game folder
  • Run the SkyrimTogether.exe file within your Skyrim game directory
  • If you're prompted for SkyrimSE.exe, it'll be in your Skyrim game directory, so point SkyrimTogether.exe towards that file

Playing Skyrim with your buddies is pretty simple thanks to Skyrim Together Reborn.

Between this, the Breath of the Wild multiplayer mod for which a YouTuber offered a $10,000 bounty, and even the Short Hike multiplayer mod released earlier this year, players are finding some pretty ingenious ways to play these games with their friends. More to the point, though, this mod (and the developer's Fallout Together project, which isn't ready just yet) shows that there's a healthy demand for co-op Bethesda RPGs. Make it happen, Bethesda, and try not to repeat the Fallout 76 launch, if you would.
