Legendary Pictures is apparently developing movies based on EA properties The Sims and SimCity. These movies, if they do come to fruition, will be Legendary's third and fourth attempts at videogame adaptations. They'll follow 2016's Warcraft and 2019's Detective Pikachu.
Wait, what? The Sims and SimCity movies? How?
Supposedly, the SimCity movie will be a "comedic version of a Roland Emmerich-esque disaster movie" set inside the world of SimCity. First-time scribe Mike Rosillio will pen the script, while the production and development of the movie will be overseen by Legendary executives John Silk and Ali Mendes. At the moment, the movie only seems to have outlines for its characters, referring to "Dad", "Mom", "Son", and "Villain". Naturally, no actors, directors, or other creative personnel have been attached to the project yet.
Details for The Sims are rather more scarce. If the above report is to be believed, the characters in the movie will appear both in the real world and within the game world. The lead character, Katie, is a "funny hot mess", while supporting character Cliff is described as "a cute nerd". Other characters include MMA performer Rick, Katie's assistant Cora, and womanizer Jared.
It seems that both productions are very, very early on in development, so we don't have anything approaching a release window for them yet. It's going to be interesting to see how Legendary and the creative personnel they appoint take on the rather idiosyncratic worlds of these games. We also haven't had any kind of official announcement regarding these projects yet, so it could be some time before they see the light of day. That's especially true with the ongoing coronavirus crisis causing mayhem across the entertainment industry. As ever, we'll bring you more on this as soon as we get it.
