Square Enix have announced a venture into
harvesting the life stream cloud based gaming with the launch of Shinra Technologies. The American based company “intends to change the game industry ecosystem by offering new types of game experiences through Shinra's proprietary cloud technologies.”
The press release put out today states that Shinra is already negotiating with
a terrorist organisation, comprised of angry gamers “best in class” developers. Yves Guillemot, CEO and co-founder of Ubisoft states “Ubisoft has long believed that the cloud will play an important part in gaming’s future…We are intrigued by the direction Shinra Technologies, Inc. is taking and look forward to seeing what their architecture and technologies can deliver.”
It’s a bold statement by Squeenix but the tone of the press release angles more towards providing the infrastructure behind pre-existing game development rather than a platform in its own right. With Steam in such a dominant position in the market I highly doubt Shinra would be able to move into that section of the industry with much success unless they do something highly radical
like building a megacity and creating a legion of genetically modified super soldiers.
Shinra have advised that “Firm content lineups and service requirements will be unveiled at a later time.” With a beta test planned in the coming months, I recommend keeping an eye on this one.
