Atlus has closed out 2021 by announcing that  Shin Megami Tensei V sales have hit some pretty impressive numbers, making the latest entry the best-selling mainline game in the franchise to date.

Shin Megami Tensei V was announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive last year. It's proven to be a solid improvement to the SMT formula and it seems quite a few fans felt the same way: it quickly attained the highest launch sales for the franchise in a little over a month. Now, we've learned that SMT V has also become the best-selling game in the entire Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

As Game Informer reports, the Japanese gaming publication Famitsu highlighted a bunch of interesting New Year's cards released by game developers. New Year's cards are a long-running tradition in Japan, so it's no surprise to see so many companies (both big and small) release cool little pieces of promotional art to celebrate the new year.

What was surprising, however, was some stats shared by Atlus: since its launch in November 2021, Shin Megami Tensei V sales have hit over 800,000 units cumulatively. That's fairly impressive for what is typically regarded as a somewhat more niche JRPG.

According to Game Informer's reckoning, the previous best-selling game in the franchise Shin Megami Tensei IV managed a little over 600,000 sales in its lifetime. That means that SMT V didn't just beat out the previous entry by over 200,000 units -- it managed to pull it off in a little less than two months.

With the holiday season over, we probably won't see any huge spikes in these sales numbers in the next few months. However, future Nintendo eShop discounts (and the slow trickle of post-launch sales) will likely drive Shin Megami Tensei V sales numbers up even higher, setting an even higher bar for the next core game in the franchise.
