spyro the dragon remaster ps4

Considering the success of last year’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, it isn’t a complete surprise to see another classic PlayStation franchise come back to life on current-generation consoles. According to sources close to the project who spoke with Kotaku UK, a remastered Spyro the Dragon trilogy is in the works and is set for release in Q3 2018.

The trilogy, which was released between 1998 and 2000 for the PlayStation, will be receiving the same treatment that the Crash Bandicoot remaster received, being rebuilt from the ground up. This includes new textures and assets, along with new animations, cinematics, and a redone soundtrack.

Sources say that the as of yet unnamed remaster is set to be officially announced next month on PlayStation 4. The game will feature similar upgrades to the Crash collection and support PS4 Pro out of the box. The debut is set for Q3, although some suspect a September release to coincide with the original's 1998 launch. The remaster will, of course, include Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon.

Those without a PS4 don’t necessarily need to rush out to get one just for the remaster. According to the same sources, the Spyro trilogy will be exclusive to Sony’s console for one year, and then it will be ported to other systems in 2019. This is in line with the rumors surrounding the Crash N.Sane Trilogy, which was also a PS4 exclusive but might be ported to other consoles soon.

For those of you who didn’t play these gems (pun intended) back on the original PlayStation, the Spyro games were platformers developed by Insomniac and followed a purple dragon and his dragonfly companion, Sparx, on a journey to save his fellow dragons from various evils. Each game has several main overworlds with a set of levels to conquer. Spyro has to jump, glide, charge, and breathe fire in order to get through each stage.

What are your thoughts on the possible Spyro the Dragon Trilogy coming to PS4? Are you excited for the remake?
