[Rumor] Pokémon Sun and Moon to be Released on the Switch

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon have been released today, with over 10 million copies shipped worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS title.

However, some sources believe that the latest Pokémon games will also be coming to another a system, the Nintendo Switch in the new year.

According to Eurogamer's Tom Phillips, multiple sources have told him that the Nintendo Switch will feature a third game in the seventh generation of Pokémon - which Phillips likens to a Pokémon Yellow version. It would be a stand-alone, updated version of the previously released games like Pokémon Yellow was generation 1, and is currently codenamed Pokémon Stars.

Phillips even points out that we may have seen a sneak peak of this game in action on the Nintendo Switch way back in February. The first trailer announcing Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon contained further easter eggs, including one screenshot of a half-rendered Pikipek that had everyone buzzing. That screenshot may have been from the Nintendo Switch, which would mean the Switch version of the game has been developed alongside Sun and Moon. Phillips also mentions that development on Stars stopped for several months to further polish Sun and Moon before launch, but has since resumed since the game has gone gold.

Other sources note high-resolution textures and the possibility of new Pokémon in the Switch version, as well as trade capabilities between versions thanks to the Pokémon Bank.

Of course, there is no way to confirm that Pokémon Stars even exists, although it is likely that GameFreak and The Pokémon Company are working on a new game or a previous generation remake, which many speculate to be based on Diamond and Pearl.  If the rumors prove to be true, however, the Switch version of the game will be the first mainland Pokémon game on a home console, instead of a handheld. Previous Pokémon titles on consoles have been side games or spinoffs, such as Pokémon StadiumPokémon Coliseum, and Pokkén Tournament.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are currently out now for purchase.
