Thanks to three separate sources talking to Eurogamer we now have another new rumor to throw in the Nintendo Switch rumor pile. This new rumor claims that the Switch will be getting GameCube games added to its Virtual Console system.

The sources told them that the GameCube support has already been tested and there are three games already prepared for the Switch: Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. The sources didn't have any information on all of the platforms that would be available on the Switch's Virtual Console, but they had apparently heard there will be an upgrade program in order to let you upgrade your previously purchased Virtual Console games, for a fee, rather than paying full price again (why not just let them carry over for free?)

The team behind the Switch's Virtual Console seems to be the same one responsible for the NES Classic Edition console, Nintendo European Research and Development (NERD). The team is said to be currently working on an Animal Crossing Virtual Console version for the Switch, and if you want to be super meta you can play NES games you obtain in the Virtual Console Animal Crossing version. The sources also say that Nintendo is looking into adding support for the Wii U's GameCube controller adapter.

One reason behind finally adding support for GameCube games is apparently because Nintendo wants to make sure Super Smash Bros. Melee is easily accessible and playable. The eSports importance of Melee is very obvious for anyone who keeps up with the eSports scene, and thankfully it seems Nintendo realizes that it would be silly of them to do something that would hurt its importance. It would also help Nintendo sell Switch consoles by marketing them with eSports as a focus.

Quick Take

Nintendo finally adding GameCube support for the Virtual Console is a great move. It'll be nice to play some of my favorite games from the GameCube era again, and will let younger gamers get a chance to play them for the first time. Two games I'd absolutely love to see on the Virtual Console would have to be Custom Robo and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

What games would you like to see make it to the GameCube Virtual Console? Does this rumor, if true, make the Switch a more appealing buy? Let us know in the comments!
