Microsoft may be working on a new "Career" system for the Xbox ecosystem with loot crates for avatars according to Windows Central.

Previously, Xbox platform chief Mike Ybarra had stated that he believes the focus of Gamerscore may be too narrow to properly represent the accomplishments of gamers who are focused on a smaller number of overall titles. Esports gamers, for example, might have thousands of hours in a single game as opposed to clearing dozens of different titles like other gamers might do, yet their Achievement Score would obviously be much lower as the easiest way to earn new points is by playing new titles.

Windows Central has received documents that purport to indicate that Microsoft is working on something called the "Career" system to remedy this issue. The Career system would not replace the existing Gamer Score dynamic; rather, it would act as a separate system that measures a gamer's accomplishments differently. Gamers using this system would be able to achieve levels & prestige ranks as well as complete quests doled out by the system.

New Xbox Avatars were supposed to launch last fall but they have yet to be deployed. This may be due to the rumored Avatar Loot Crates.

As for the rewards, there would be more to it than just a number going up - the Career system would allow Xbox gamers to receive Avatar loot crates filled with cosmetic goodies for their virtual personas. There isn't any indication that you'd be able to buy loot crates with money, although it would be a bit odd if there weren't a way for Microsoft to eke out a few extra bucks out of the system.

Whether or not this system is actually in the works, the Career system as described would certainly fill a gap in the digital accomplishments spectrum for players who are dedicated to a smaller pool of games. We'll keep our eyes open for more details as they come to light.

What do you think of the Xbox Career system? Do you think Avatar loot crates would be monetized? Let us know in the comments below!
