United Label and Polygon Treehouse revealed a July 23 release date for their adventure game Roki during the first day of the Guerrilla Collective event stream.
Roki is an adventure game where you dive into the adventures of Tove, a young girl who has magical powers. She explores a large, uncharted world, looking for secrets, solving ancient puzzles, and fighting monsters.
Most importantly, she will be keeping a journal of all her discoveries. Indeed, mapping, and using other features of Tove's journal, is a key part of the game. It is also a tool for learning more about the lore behind it.
Roki is inspired by Scandinavian folklore and the developers describe it as a "dark contemporary fairy tale." Most of the backdrop is wintry with small villages and large landscapes. Some of the most memorable visuals are gigantic, looming beings in the background.
On her adventure she unravels a story of loss and uncovers more of her past to learn the truth about herself and her family. Overall, it's a game about "monsters that shouldn't exist, but do."
The developers emphasize that this is being made for all players, with non-violent gameplay, accessible controls, and universal themes. It will be a modern take on the adventure game genre. So even if you typically are turned off from adventure games because of tricky puzzles, you may be able to get into Roki.
Roki will be launching for PC, on both GOG and Steam, on the July 23 release date and will come later in the year to the Switch.
