Douse your torches in oil and get ready to delve deep into the past. Roguelike dungeon crawler Emberlight will launch an expedition to Steam on August 13th.
Emberlight casts players as knights of the Ember Order. The game is set in a world in which the Gods have granted players "a great gift - and a great curse". Player characters can absorb the abilities of enemies they fight, giving them an edge in battle and allowing for customization. As the Gods fight for control of their creations, players must complete quests, uncover the backstory of the game's world, and fight the corruption caused by the power of Ember. Check out the launch trailer below:
Developer Quarter Onion Games is calling Emberlight "a true roguelike experience". Gameplay-wise, Emberlight is all about exploring procedurally generated dungeons. Player characters have a chance to absorb every ability used by enemies. Doing so allows players to customize their characters, but there's a cost. Each ability absorbed by a character will gradually corrupt their soul. This corruption will initially manifest itself as unstable corruption character traits, followed by metamorphosis into an evil creature.
Each run of Emberlight will last between 30 and 60 minutes. At the conclusion of each run, the most corrupted player character will kill their allies and become a boss in a future run. As a boss, the character will have all of the abilities they acquired during the player's run with them. Quarter Onion says this provides a "never-ending challenge" in Emberlight, with a stronger party required to defeat each successively stronger boss.
Emberlight will launch for PC via Steam on August 13th. You can wishlist the game here if you're interested. Alternately, if you'd like to get early builds of the game, you can sign up to the dev's Patreon as well as joining the exclusive Discord channel.
